Solidarity Economy in Greece

The SUSY report of 2015 on Social and Solidarity Economy indicates that while solidarity economy gained ground tremendously after the crisis of 2008, it is still a very young sector with most of the projects founded after 2012. [3]

"In Greece the experience of Solidarity for all is a remarkable one. This organization has been active at national level, offering coordination and practical assistance to all kinds of initiatives in many fields, ranging from social clinics and pharmacies to community kitchens and food distribution, from social grocery stores to free sharing and social economy, etc. Solidarity for all is a ‘child’ of the crisis: it was formed to address the needs for interconnection, communication, facilitation and coordination of all the diverse structures, movements and initiatives that have sprung because of the crisis and its effects on the people of this country".[3]

Initiatives & Projects

BioMe or Viome, the first and only self-managed industrial facility at national level in 2015, is a cooperative and solidarity enterprise initiated by workers at a factory in Thessaloniki, Greece that was abandonded by its former owners during the financial crisis. "The effort of the unpaid workers to take their future into their own hands and to claim the means of production as well as the facility itself, sprung a solidarity movement that was not limited within the borders of the Country".[3]

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in Greece

According to URGENCI, the International Network for Community Supported Agriculture, the first CSA initiatives in Greece was started in 1995 and then more after 2010 in response to the crisis. The URGENCI report "Overview of Community Supported Agriculture in Europe" names 7 known initiatives providing for up to 2.400 people in 2015. The legal status of CSA in Greece is unclear which leads to a relatively slow development of CSA initiatives, even though there is a “surge of citizens’ groups trying to tackle food in different ways, (... like) box-schemes, collective-buying groups, no-intermediaries markets, social solidarity grocery stores, non-profit supermarkets (...)“.[4]
