Dyssekilde ecovillage

The Dyssekilde Ecovillage is a community in [Denmark] that came to existance in 1989. In 2020 it consisted of 125 inhabitants. Houses are built in a sustainable fashing with adequate materials, heating systems, water management, energy production and consumption. The ecovillage has a car-sharing service, a recycling center and a windmill.

The ecovillage has developed from the idea to create a village on ecological principles (sustainable and recycled materials, low-energy and simplicity), self-made private houses and common outside grounds. The social vision was to develop a good and supportive neighborhood and take decisions together at shared meetings.

Later on more land was purchased to complete the 7 housing-groups which constitute the village. Each group of houses has different styles and characteristics. The Moon group has a basic round design (some of the first houses were domes). Dyssekilde ecovillage has succeeded to become an integrated part of the mainstream surroundings, the village Torup, and a local community Hall, a kindergarten, a school, a health-and-food shop, a bakery etc.

Several social and cultural projects have been realized inside the community. The ecovillage has a Common House (with a hall, meeting room, office, children's room and kitchen for common meals, laundry room). It hosts a culture-festival week, a music festival and many circles focusin on diverse topics, such as: organic agriculture, art, handicraft, recycling, sustainability etc.

In 2019, Torup, the adjacent village to Dyssekilde, has been declared “the Village of the Year” for its sustainability and social achievements. Dyssekilde ecovillage is virtuous in using communal infrastructure and shared resources and rural revitalisation.
